8月11日 things happened to me for recent half yearI haven’t kept my blog for long time. There are many things happened to me during that time. So, I would briefly write down those things here. I may elaborate some of those topics in my coming blog-article someday, if there was some request or I had time….
Graduate my school (27th March) First of all, I finally completed my master course after 3 years’ studying including one-year exchange program at HUT in Finland. If summed up bachelor course period, I have been registered at T.I.T for 7 years totally. Having recalled that 7 years memory at the graduate ceremony, I had a kind of nostalgic feeling. On the other hand, I was looking forward to things I will encounter from then on.
Visit to India (17 – 25th March) I visited Indian Software Company, named Covansys, from which I had gotten job offer. As I said in previous article, I had decided to get in Hitachi already. But kindly enough, one officer at Covansys Japan gave me a favor that permits me to visit and look around their Chennai and Bangalore offices. The trip was really educative in that I could learn the software development processes and many on-going project at Covansys. On top of that, it is excitement to walk around Indian town where filled up with full of energy and chaos.
Complete Master thesis (5th March) Honestly, it had been hard time for me to tackle with my master topic for long time. But fortunately I could be on time to build up the proto-type system of automated essay grading by the time I had to present it to other project members in inter-colleges. My work will be published in the book with other co-authors, and also, will be posted to one academic journal after some elaboration.
Training at Hitachi (April – 11th July 2006) The first one-week training was taken place in Roppongi Hills, that is a kind of branded place where rich people prefer with living. (I heard Tom Cruise had stayed at the hotel next to our working building) Working at such high ranked place was really wonderful experience to me, because it will be less likely to happen again in my life. After one week training, I took one month business training and 3 months engineering training at Totsuka factory, which is the main office of software department at Hitachi. Having completed those trainings, now I am working at the division laboratory at Shin-Kawasaki. I will be assigned to some SAN (storage area network) project, that is one of the most internationalized project in Software department at Hitachi because of the collaboration with HDS, system integration company in U.S.. Although I haven’t had any experience on that area, I am interested in working there, plus it is good to learn new thing, after all.
Moved house nearby working place (18th July 2006) In order to escape from one hour commuting time with notoriously crowded Japanese train, I moved house, which located 10min on foot from the working place. One of the happiness brought by this movement is that I no longer need to wake up at 6:00 am in the morning.
Well, that is enough writing this time. I may update my blog later depending on my whim….
3月6日 Fighting argumentLast weekend, I went back my hometown, Osaka, by highway bus, as this was my preferable way due to its price advantage. Normally, I bought one way ticket twice. But since this time was quite short journey, i bought round tickets. This was the start of the story i will tell from now.
The trouble happened because I carelessly threw away my passenger tickets and only kept my seat tickets with me. As the result, I was charged ticket fee by bus driver, again.
The reason I made such mistake is that passenger ticket and seat ticket are combined in one way ticket's case. Thus I did not know that round tickets' ones are separated. That made me consider extra ticket as just receipt, and threw it away.
Since 60euros were not neglectable amount for me, soon after I went back to Tokyo, I went to the ticket counter, where i bought those, in order to try to ask money refund with printed out bill of credit card, which had proved my purchase of bus tickets, and receipt of re-purchased ticket.
The one middle-aged guy sat down at the counter at that time. When I explained my situation and was about to ask him a favor, he bluntly backed my documentation, saying "we never ever refund fees, unless you brought lost tickets. It is your fault not to keep the tickets with you." When I negotiate with somebody, sometimes I pretend to be angry. But, ashamedly, i got really angry at that time. Right away, we plunged into fighting argument.
After arguing for 10mins, I decided to stop such fruitless talking, and declared that i would leave, bluntly. The guy said "I am sorry" with not sorry attitude at all. Then, I replied "yeah, you should be sorry!"
I admit I was really nasty guy and probably I should be ashamed in that my attitude was not matured one. But by the same token, this may be applied to the guy at the counter as well. Since JR is the half-monopoly and half-government company, I feel some of her employees are not really well-trained as business person.
Anyway, that was unpleasant accident and left a bad taste in my mouth. Now, I am wishing I would be rich enough for not need to care 60euros so much....Hmm...Do I have to work hard?...
2月28日 illumination in my neighborhoodBefore Christmas day, I took the pictures of beautiful illumination decorated around the private house. Because of my busyness or laziness, i did not upload it so far since then. But now finally i did.
Those were taken in my neighborhood. Basically my neighborhood is not tourist place, but just resident area and have nothing special to see for visitors, but such performance gives people fun.
Actually, I like the place where I am living now. One of the reasons is probably this area has similar atmosphere to my hometown. It is neither rich area nor slam. People living there are a bit conservative, but warmhearted. That's typical peaceful downtown and living cost is a bit cheaper than surrounding..
Since I will probably need to move from here after i complete 3month training period, by that time I am thinking to hang around here as much as I can such as small parks.
When i find something interesting, i may take a pictures and upload those here, if possible. (There is U.S. military base 10km away from here, but it is not permitted to take pictures.) 2月2日 Found jobI haven't kept my blog for around 2 months because of job-seeking activities.
A week ago, I finally got offers from some campanies and made up mind to get in Hitachi. Up to the time I got offer from Hitachi, I had applied to eight companies and luckily passed six of them including NEC and Fujitsu. Honestly, this result even made myself surprised. I remembered my ex-lab-mates, who were much smarter guys than me, struggled to seek a job last year. Therefore, at the beginning I assumed my job seeking activity would get in the fog for a long time.
Analyzed job-marketing reports after getting an offer, I came to conclusion that my success of job seeking mostly owed to economic recovery and retirement of mass-generation. As most of companies hired more freshmen to make up for retired employees in order for keeping productivity, i can say, the students in this year could have more chances than those of recent few years.
This kind of bubble economy brought us luck. But it made me remind the similar history, which happened 15 years ago. In 1990, the old good age, Japan had bubbled economy. For companies, it was hard to secure freshmen at that time, because ratio of job offers to job seekers are more than 1.5. Consequently, the students in that age were treated very well and were called "the egg of gold". In few years later, however, when economy got into recession, ironically they became good target to be laid off simply because their generation were too many. This was good lesson that people cannot always rely on luck..
Since I have heard the economic bubble from real estate in U.S. will likely burst in not so distant future, I predict Japanese economic will also get back to recession at the same time. (U.S. is the major market of most Japanese manufacturing companies.)
Now, hope I wouldn't be one of those who were laid off in few years later...
12月8日 Result of TOEFLI took TOEFL, the English examination, today. But, unfortunately, the result of exam was quite unsatisfactory.
The reason i took the examination is that one company, which i would like to apply for geting the job, requires applicants to hold more than 230point of TOEFL socre. My maximum score so far was 217 so that i wanted to renew my score to fulfill the requirement. Honestly speaking, I was confident to gain 230. Because even after coming back Japan, I kept studying English by practicing TOEFL questions with 3 books. Furthermore, I often read english paper for researching and occationlly litened CNN. My health condition on the exam day was also perfect by taking enough sleep last night. However, it seems such confidence is arrogant one. I would like to retry TOEFL someday again. But at this moment, I have little time to do it, because the deadline of my master thesis is in 2 month. Hence, instead of English, I would make my best effort to improve my thesis quality. It can be one of the appeal point when I take a interview of some company. Hope I could find other nice postions which fit to my ability. P.S.
Shocked at my result after taking exam, I was wandering around town without thinking...All of sudden, I reminded the words my high school teacher often repeated. "Result is the only thing to prove your ability. If it were not for result, any kind of effort is fruitless." Yes, this is true. Now, I have to achieve some "result" in my reseaching in order to make up for my failure in English and to prove that my life is not completely fruitless. 12月4日 Marathon raceLast Sunday, i participated to marathon competition taken place in Yamanashi prefecture.
Following is the web-site of this Kawaguchi marathon race, one of the official races authorized by Japan athlete League, witch is in turn gaining more popularity even among international athletes. http://www.sports-info.co.jp/kawaguchi/index.html Competition took place at Kawaguchi lake located nearby Mt.Fuji. The running course went along the Kawaguchi lake-shore so that runners can watch nice lake view on the course. Also, one of the best perspective of Mt.Fuji can be seen at some point in the course. I took pictures of some of those sceneries during my running. Those can be seen in my photo Album of this blog, named "kawaguchi lake marathon" As I might have told before, one of my hobbies is jogging. When i studied in bachelor course, i used to practice running belonging to Triathlon club. Honestly, i was not really serious athlete compared to other club mates and was not even supposed to be so, either. But still, a kind of pressure from the club atmosphere pulled me up to the semi-athlete level. After all, I participated to marathon competition 6 times and recorded 3hour 45min at my best by the time I secede the club due to moving to another campus in my university. On the other hand, i did not took part in this marathon race with such stoic attitude, but rather prefer with having fun without any pressure. Indeed, I even did not choose full-marathon course, but did 27km course, instead. Maybe i did not have confidence to complete 42km, as i seldom practiced running last one year during my stay in Finland. But i would say, it owed to this decision that I could keep enough energy to take a lot of photos in the middle of races. It was quite fun to have been there for me. Not to mention enjoying nice views, I could meet many pre-club mates occationaly, who has been scattered after graduation. Furthermore, seeing such serious athletes makes me aware of the necessity to strength my weak body, again. Therefore, I plan to participate Shinjyku half marathon taken place in coming January. At least it will be good motivation to keep practice. 12月1日 The session of scandinavian nightTwo weeks ago, I participated to the session called "scandinavian evening", which is organized by the international office in my university. The session was actually great oooprtunity for me to make an acquaintance of many students, and i really enjoy it. My friend Hirsohi told about what we have done in his blog. Here, I would mention a bit more detail about what session itself is like and how I felt about the session as a whole.
The aim of this session was to promote mutual understanding between Japanese students and scandinavian ones and let more Japanese students interest in scandinavian countries as the candidates countries of abroad studying. So, the primary audience were asuumed to be japanese students who are interested in or planning to study somewhere in other countries.
The session consisted of two parts. In the first half of the session, students from Scandinavian countries gave presentations on their countries and universities. In addition, Japnese students, who had been these countries, commented or made a short speech in such way to complement their presentation based on their experiences. The latter half of the session was tea time. Participants and presenters felt free to talk each other.
In my opinion, this session was succeed to promote mutual freindship among participates from both countries and they could know more about the Scandinavian countries as a whole. On the other hand, we might as well narrow the scope of presentation in such way to emphasize what the audience truly wanted to know, rather than covering many
general facts. What I want to say is, if i were audience, i wanted to know what is the benefit and advantage of studying in Scandinavian countries over doing so in other countries such as U.S. or British. Franky speaking, for most japanese people, they will come up with those English countries at first, when it comes to studying abroad. Therefore, if we could discriminate scandinavian attraction from english countries' ones, more people would be interested in scandinavia as the result of being broadened their views.
Nevertheless, anyway, this is just my impression or opinion and I again address that presentation was great enough. The point here is that i strongly desire that more people would be interested in scandinavian countries, where i have been for one year. Hopefully, it happened a lot through thit event.
